About the Story
Get ready for a microscopic adventure that’s bigger than you can imagine! In “Do Not Lick This Book!”, a curious little microbe named Min is waiting to whisk your child away on a journey through the most unexpected landscapes. From the fuzzy peaks of a sweater to the vast plains of a tooth, Min shows us that even the tiniest corners of our world are teeming with life and wonder.
Your little one will delight in following Min’s travels as we learn about the hidden worlds that exist all around, and inside, us. With vibrant illustrations and a gentle nudge towards scientific curiosity, “Do Not Lick This Book!” encourages children to look closer, ask questions, and imagine the incredible stories unfolding right under their very noses (or, in their noses!). So, while we definitely recommend *not* licking the book, I absolutely encourage diving headfirst into its delightful, microscopic marvels!
Themes & Lessons
Microbiology: The story transforms abstract science into an accessible adventure, introducing children to the unseen ecosystem of microbes living on everyday surfaces.
Hygiene: Without relying on fear, it provides a realistic foundation for cleanliness by showing exactly what germs are and why washing our hands matters.
Interactivity: The physical prompts (like touching the page to “pick up” the microbe) turn reading into active participation, locking in the educational concepts through play.
For Parents – Activity ideas!
- The Glitter Germ Transfer: Put a small amount of lotion and fine glitter (or something like flour) on your child’s hands. Have them touch a few (pre-approved!) household items. Inspect the hand prints on the item to show how germs can get from their hands on items, and vice versa! Finish by having them test washing their hands with just cold water versus warm, soapy water to see what actually removes the glitter.
- Microbe Scavenger Hunt: Have your child explore the house and look for, what they believe to be, the most “microbe-heavy” hotspots (like doorknobs, keyboards, or the TV remote). Have them explain their thinking, and – perhaps you can convince them to clean the items!
- The Bread Experiment: Take three slices of fresh, preservative-free bread. Have them touch one with unwashed hands, touch one after thoroughly washing with soap, and leave one entirely untouched as a control. Seal them in individual clear ziplock bags and observe the microbial growth over a week to see the real-world impact of hygiene.
For Teachers
“Do Not Lick This Book!” is a microscopic marvel that sparks scientific curiosity and encourages careful observation. Through the adventures of Min, a tiny microbe, children embark on a journey of discovery, learning about the unseen world around them and the importance of hygiene in a playful, engaging way. It fosters early scientific thinking, promotes critical discussion about health, and ignites the imagination, proving that even the smallest creatures can lead to the biggest adventures in learning.

Lesson Plan Ideas
| Format | Activity | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Groups | Microscope Marvels | If possible, microscopes and petri-dishes, or various everyday items (leaves, fabric, sugar) for children to observe. In groups they can draw what they see, and create the little microbes they believe to live on these materials. |
| Individual | Germ-tastic Art | Give children washable paint and paper. Encourage them to dip their fingers in the paint and create “germs” of different shapes and colors, then use a pretend “soap” (a wet wipe) to “wash” them away. |
| Whole Class | Story Time Scientists | Read the book aloud, then pause at different points and ask children what they think the microbes are doing or where they might be going next, encouraging imaginative storytelling and scientific curiosity. |
